Social Networking and Job Searching
This is an interesting article from the nytimes about how even in this economy, social netowrking sites are an important aspect in finding the right candidate (or to just boost the number of resumes on file).

In March, after several depressing months of searching, Mr. Kennedy received a “Jobvite,” an e-mail invitation to apply for a job. The invitation came from a former co-worker who had gone to work for Hubspot, a company based in Cambridge, Mass., that sells Web-based marketing software. Hubspot had open positions and was offering bonuses to its employees to help fill them. "

Re: Social Networking and Job Searching
That is a cool article. It did make a good point near the beginning though, which is to sanitize your profile before you start using social networking sites to begin looking for jobs. It is something that most people should take to heart, as once its on the web, it is hard to remove completely, so choose wisely when using your facebook account.

Companies offering bonuses for employees to help HR find candidates to fill open positions is a common thing. I co-oped at a financial services firm where they were offering up to $5000 for a highly demanded position. So basically, if you referred a candidate to HR for that particular position, and that candidate got the job, you would automatically have a $5000 bonus. Then they also had an incentive for employees to simply refer people to the company and they would be entered into a raffle for yet more bonus money.
I think the reason why companies do this is that if they feel their employees are of a relatively high caliber compared to the average in the job market, it is likely that high caliber workers also know other high caliber candidates. Furthermore, because employees don't want to look bad by referring poor candidates to HR, employees would only refer candidates that they really think would fit well into the open position. Finally, because the employees know the candidates at a personal level, that could help HR more than just a cover letter + resume.
