Google poised to apply AdWords to eBooks
The Christian Science Monitor worries that Google's recently announced entrance into the eBook marketplace will change the way we read books forever. As the author tongue-in-cheekily asks, will we see ads like "I see you’re reading Emily Post. Can I sell you some stamps?" Perhaps a reader of Jules Verne will be presented with an opportunity to take an undersea vacation, or someone reading Mark Twain will be able to buy whitewash for their fence with a quick link from an ebook-reader.
Maybe even books will become free and ad-supported in the future? Sort of a scary thought.

Re: Google poised to apply AdWords to eBooks
One of the major problems with adwords up until now is the system's inability to see context of searches. The ad generated by a google search are really only brought up because of specific words in your search.
However, with ebooks, you're in a much narrower category than a general online search. The system at least knows you're reading a book. It's much more likely that the ads generated will be for other books that might suit your tastes, judging from what you're already reading.
On a side note, I don't think an underwater vacation would be all that fun.

This article also talks about the Google eBook involvement with advertising.

As Google begins to expand its electronic book database, there will be a larger number of adverstisements associated with them. Internet pages are now being littered with advertisements in plain site, and the phenomena of advertising through essentially monitoring what users are looking at is developing. In this article, the analogy of this occurrence is to the marketing techniques used by Amazon. If a user is looking at a particular product, advertisements for similar products will be shown to the users. This could be the case for Google as well. If a person is reading a particular book, an ad for a similar book may be present as well. It is a question of how far Google will go to advertise. If the eBook system grows, more ad's might be sold by Google. What if you are reading a book, and suddenly in between chapters an ad for some other book or product pops up? This might take away from the act of reading. This could be applicable to the sale of advertisements. It was discussed in class how ad's are sold. As opposed to an advertisement being sold by click, with the growth of eBooks, ad's may just be sold by book in the future.
