Can Twitter make you amoral? Empty Can Twitter make you amoral?

This study at USC found that some human emotions are formulated more quickly than others. Pain, for example, elicits a quick response in others, while emotions like admiration and compassion take much longer to develop. Perhaps this is why www.fmylife.com is so popular? On a more serious note, perhaps we need to consider how we're getting our news in an increasingly digital world -- the study says devoting more time to fully absorb news allows for a fuller emotional experience, whereas quick-shot news sources like Twitter don't leave time to make moral judgments before formulating a response.

Another problem with twitter and similar networks is that they are creating a world that no longer cares about really absorbing information. People on twitter quickly read a post or a piece of news and then move on. People don't look at the bigger picture as much anymore. With so many emails, twitter posts, and facebook status updates, how is anyone expected to give a decent amount of time to any one of those? I think in that respect twitter is dumbing down our brains and making us happy with just reading a small 140 character post and moving on with our lives.

Well, 140 characters inherently does not allow much in the way of detailed information. If there was long complicated story, the information is going to be incomplete. I have always considered twitter-esque tidbits and facebook statuses to be "thumbnails" of information. In an image-oriented website, a large image is shrunk down into a more manageable size on the page, so that more pictures can be shown at once. If a particular picture catches your interest, one needs only click on it to enlarge it. In terms of information about friends, the same can be said. A twitter update doesn't have to be your source of news, it can act as a mechanism to alert you to contact friends and find out what is going on with them, if something in their life strikes you as something you need to know about. And as for emotion, I must disagree. For news stories, admittedly, 140 characters would limit the ability to craft a well-written news article, with all the sentiment and spin that journalists love to pour into their stories. But if composed well, you can pack a lot of punch into a few words.
