Lets say you graduate next year and have flexibility in when you get to come into work. This article talks about how to make the decision of when to go into work. The author creates a game where he has to work 10 hours and gets a 30 minute lunch break. The author in essence has about seven different schedules to choose from. The game has a mixed nash equilibrium that is weighted on the very early starts and very late starts. The author describes this as the case because some days he wakes up earlier than other days. He also feels more productive on certain days.

This is a map of the closings and congestion levels of roads in the Chicago area.

It's amazing how the transportation departments in different cities can monitor traffic and predict congestion on certain roads at certain times. People going to work and leaving work account for the bulk of traffic at certain times. If you take a city like Chicago, people will be going to work until about 10 in the morning, and leaving work after 4 or 5. This is how rush hour is created, and it is something that is unavoidable. In terms of a Nash equilibrium, the highway is the optimal solution to get to work. Despite the knowledge that people will be going to work, the highway is the most direct road into a city like Chicago, and traffic regulation on highways enables the delay to be less than an alternate route. Going to work could have no delay if you leave really early in the morning, but during a rush hour when there might be delays, you it is still the most popular path to take the highway.
